Learning Self Hypnosis

Learning the skill of self hypnosis can put a very valuable tool in your life. Has there ever been a time when you have needed to focus, calm yourself or boost your self-confidence quickly? With this ability, you'll be able to use the power of your mind to control your body. Once you have learned how to hypnotize yourself you'll be able to accomplish many things through the suggestions you give yourself.

Self hypnosis is easy to learn, but requires practice. Some people with certain personality traits, find it easier to learn. But this is a skill that almost all people are able to accomplish. Practice is the key.

If you have a good imagination and memory, if you concentrate well, if you react emotionally to people and events around you, then you will probably find Self Hypnosis easy. But even people who are logical and not too emotional, who are highly organized, who may not have a natural gift for trance work may simply need to practice more.

There are some times when self hypnosis is not the answer. If you will be unable to practice, are now, or have recently, being in treatment for mental illness, if you are hoping to uncover memories, if your problem has something to do with other people, if your pain is undiagnosed or you are in any fragile emotional state, then you need to work with a qualified medical practitioner. If you are uncertain, always consult a professional.

You can learn self hypnosis on your own, but taking classes can give you a higher degree of success. You don't want to set yourself up for failure; you want to create a positive and successful self hypnosis session. Taking a class can speed up your learning process and answer many questions you may have. It's better to learn the right way first!

Classes are superb for teens as well. They may want to focus on academic or sports improvement and self confidence, as well as, stress management.

Remember, this is a skill you are learning, and, like any skill, it takes practice. In order to master this skill, you need to practice, several times a day. You can practice going in and out of trance for just a minute or two once an hour during the day. Or you can practice self hypnosis sessions that might last five or 10 minutes and repeat those three to five times a day. The more imes you do it, the better you get.

You may find that first thing in the morning or last thing at night is easier. You can do this just about anywhere - but remember, never do this when you are driving any kind of vehicle. You can practice at your desk or even on the bus for just a few minutes. It's nicest, if you have privacy though. If you practice lying down or last thing at night and find yourself falling asleep, simply sit up in a chair or do it earlier in the day. If you find yourself a little bit groggy afterwards, stay sitting in your chair and do some deep breathing for a few extra minutes.

Optimum success is usually achieved with simple problems. If you can state your problem, or the solution for it in one sentence, you will probably be able to solve it. Remember also, that success in hypnosis is determined by how ready you are to truly change.

If you are concerned about being able to remember your suggestions, write them down on a piece of paper, open your eyes at the appropriate time and read them. Whether you memorize them or read them, you'll need to decide on your problem and choose your suggestions before hand. Keep your suggestions clear and simple. Write them in the present tense as if they had already happened. (i.e. "I am confident and self-assured"; "I love to exercise"; 'Fruits and vegetables are my snack of choice"). Always use positive language. Talk about what you will do, instead of what you won't do. (i.e. "When I snack, I eat fresh fruits and vegetables", as opposed to, "I won't eat ice cream")

Basically, there are two options: 1. Do everything in your mind, or, 2. Make your own recording. Your own voice can be very powerful. Sometimes a recording is easier since it gves the opportunity to pre-plan exactly what you want to say. Doing it in your own mind means you can change the suggestions easily. It's good to eventually learn to do it in your mind so you can use self-hynosis quickly whenever and whereever you want. Try both ways; you may be pleasantly surprised at the wisdom of your inner voice.

To prepare yourself, find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Turn off any phones or beepers. When practicing, it can be a good idea to set a timer as long as it isn't too loud. You may sit in a chair, lie on your bed or a couch or even lie on the floor, as long as you're comfortable. If you are sitting have your feet flat on the floor. Your arms and legs should be uncrossed. Use pillows or blankets, if you want. Wear comfortable loose clothing, take off any glasses or watches if you want.

Before you begin, place your awareness on the center of your body, feel yourself becoming solid and secure, grounding your body to the earth. Set your intention. Make a conscious decision that whatever you want to happen, will happen. Closing your eyes and repeating a mantra or trigger word like, relax, peace or om, in your mind will help to calm you. Some very slow, relaxing music playing softly in the background may help set the mood.
